Program: A.I. – Friend or Foe? / By the group /
Since the beginning of the pandemic we have held our monthly General Meetings via the Zoom app. It has worked very well, making attendance convenient for our growing number of members from outside the Portland area.
Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is truly the new buzz word on the internet. But it has been around us for decades. Now we have MicroSoft’s Bing chat (a.k.a. Sydney) and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Both are artificial intelligence (A.I.) chatbots. They can produce complex answers to complex questions and requests, but they can also produce nonsense, lies, belligerence, and malevolence.
A.I. is also being used to generate fake images. Companies have created apps that generate pictures from simple text descriptions by stitching together composites made from multiple images stolen from the internet. This further blurs the line of what we can accept as real.
At our March general meeting we will discuss what we have begun to learn about this latest sensation. We will cover how the old warnings about using the internet continue to apply. Be cautious, be skeptical, don’t believe everything you hear or see.
Please join us for our March meeting via Zoom. Especially if you have tried one of the new chatbots, we would love to hear from you.
Join in the fun at our virtual meeting, for information and camaraderie.
